Toxic E-Waste
Computer technology today’s cannot be separately with human. Every jobs in factory, house or anywhere, utilize these technology every single time. In Malaysia computer being used widely since 1990 using motherboard system 486 dos operating system. And now lots of improvement they made. But where these scrap goes to. This are the question sometimes we wondering about. Usually they thought these scrap throw to the scrap disposable. Is it that is the right place to throw these unused computer scrap.
Malaysian still in conceptual stage about managing these issues. Other develop country had started earlier and concern about the danger of toxic from the unused computer scrap. The world is consuming more and more electronic products every year. This has caused a dangerous explosion in electronic scrap e-waste containing toxic chemicals and heavy metals that cannot be disposed of or recycled safely. But this problem can be avoided. We are pressing leading electronic companies to change; to turn back the toxic tide of e-waste. Every year, hundreds of thousands of old computers and mobile phones are dumped in landfills or burned in smelters. Thousands more are exported, often illegally, from the Europe , US, Japan and other industrialised countries, to Asia . There, workers at scrap yards, some of whom are children, are exposed to a cocktail of toxic chemicals and poisons. The amount of electronic products discarded globally has skyrocketed recently, with 20-50 million tonnes generated every year. If such a huge figure is hard to imagine, think of it like this - if the estimated amount of e-waste generated every year would be put into containers on a train it would go once around the world Electronic waste e-waste now makes up five percent of all municipal solid waste worldwide, nearly the same amount as all plastic packaging, but it is much more hazardous. Not only developed countries generate e-waste; Asia discards an estimated 12 million tonnes each year. One of factor some country interested to collect these e-waste is, they gain lots profit by making it second hand parts to sales. To the low end dealer, they take this opportunity to gain lots of profit and yes it grows the economic for them too. But it effect to the healthy while chasing the wealthy of life. I n this case it also a good things is to reduce and solve the e-waste product where’s the consumer gets benefit by trade their unused parts, so do the collector. But the most important issues is the chemical effect contains on the e-waste parts. If there is some proper tolls to fix it, then it can consider helping and practical.
E-waste is now the fastest growing component of the municipal solid waste stream because people are upgrading their mobile phones, computers, televisions, audio equipment and printers more frequently than ever before. Mobile phones and computers are causing the biggest problem because they are replaced most often. In
Malaysian as we know It doesn’t mean that Malaysian not concern about it, just the execution is too slow. In Malaysia usually people send the unused computer to the computer shop and they still take it and used it. Some parts in the unused computer still function and got a value on market and still have demand on certain item. But the rest of the parts , they throw it on the garbage and waiting the daily rubbish collector to pickup those unused thing. My point is, there is no proper management to dispose all the component parts.
What is the danger can produce by these unused electronic items. These things contain lot of chemical, iron, mercury and spread frequency also radiation. If these scrap neglected at the rubbish dispose area too long, it able produce a radiation can cost effect to the human. Some able to give short time side effect, and some take long time. What ever it is, it still needs to manage properly to prevent this matter. There is one sample can be share about analogue monitor threats. For the analogue monitor, if they want to donate to the children for education for example, there is some particular threats about the analogue monitor. To donate unused monitor to the children especially the orphan for example is a good thing to do a charity and a way to distribute the used monitor or the old computers, but we have to look other aspect on healthy rather than wealthy. These are some occasion we can hear about some individual to do a charity. Analogue monitor can produce radiation around 7 feet diameter. So the safe area is 7 feet from the monitor. But how come we able to work with 7 feet distance. Analogue monitor scrap even we unplug the switch, it still contain a few volt inside the tube. My point here is analogue monitor contains LED chemical at the Cathode ray tube inside. It can cause infection to the lung. Then the multinational company come out with new product LCD also contains dangerous chemical and also dangerous when to dispose it. Both product still not safe and easy to recycle and expose workers and the environment to hazardous chemicals. These are other factor we need to consider if we don’t have an equivalent place for disposable and good product in future. We believe that manufacturers of electronic goods, who have benefited from sales of their products, should take responsibility for them from production through to the end of their lives. To prevent an e-waste crisis, manufacturers must design clean electronics with longer lifespan, that are safe and easy to recycle and will not expose workers and the environment to hazardous chemicals. Electronics manufacturers must stop using hazardous materials. In many cases, safer alternatives currently exist. The taxpayer should not bear the cost of recycling old electrical goods. Manufacturers should take full life cycle responsibility for their products and, once they reach the end of their useful life, take their goods back for re-use, safe recycling or disposal. What necessary is, ICT industry should design green product that are free from hazardous chemicals energy efficient , recycle and durable. Now Nokia is the top ranking multinational company apply green and safe product for their manufacture.
Currently one of the best solutions is to develop E-product which is easy to dispose, safe, free from any dangerous toxic to prevent from long and short term effect. But it very clear that it is not easy to ignore those chemical ingredients on these electronic parts. But I believe researcher all over the world work hard to seek any new alternative to replace the dangerous content inside and for sure it take a long time to get the better result.
Otherwise maybe creative management to recycle the unused electronic parts can reduce the pain on this third world issues nowadays. A good management like a good places to dispose, good logistic to collect and proper machine for process that e-waste product. In this matter our country should apply what ever it takes as necessary. We all known that our country known as consuming country import lots of electronic product where is at the end contaminate and poisoning the people if not take this matter seriously. For the innovative way is to encourage our student, professional, to recycle the parts create any innovative product. Using the used part create something to do with human daily life. United state shows student create robotic pizza delivery without human observe. Using used computer parts and component they able to cerate things like that. In this era globalisation there is no such thing we cannot do, the key is effort and passion encouragement focus on critical issues surrounded. long time ago about 20 years pass yes we can say that it is not fair to compare develop country like U.S with our country. But today, everything’s are open and expose to everyone.
